What this article is about
The photography industry has undergone some dramatic changes in recent years.  Whilst many photographers have retained their traditional film-based processes, Distinct Digital Photography is one of the few businesses who have embraced the digital revolution.  This article explores how we use these exciting new technologies every day.
What's the big fuss about digital?
Digital photography has experienced an unprecedented growth in popularity in the last three to five years.  Like many new technologies, there's always the promise of better results, delivered faster and opening many new doors of opportunities for both the amateur and professional.  There are many reasons why digital photography has become so popular - our experience certainly shows that this new technology allows:
  • Reduced operating costs - after your initial outlay for equipment, it's virtually free to use
  • Instant feedback - digital provides the ability to review images instantly, adjust for exposure or composition and re-shoot if necessary
  • Easy editing - modifications or enhancements to the images are easily achieved, and you can preview the results using computer software
  • Reduced waste - only the images you really want are printed
  • Environmental benefits - reducing the harmful side effects of film processing, developing and handling
Why do many people still use film?
Many professional photographers still swear by their film cameras, for any number of reasons.  In some specialised areas of the photography film still provides better results than digital, however these niche areas are slowly shrinking.  Our experience in the wedding and commercial photography areas has certainly shown that digital is definitely the way to go.

In many instances professionals have a huge investment in film-based cameras and the plunge into digital techniques comes at a big expense.  Add to this the learning curve of managing images on the computer, and it's often enough to scare some people away from going digital.  Here at Distinct Digital Photography we specialise only in digital - from the instant we press the shutter release button to the time the prints are being printed by our lab the entire process is digital.  We've worked with the digital process from the ground up, so you can trust us to look after your photographic needs.

One of the biggest myths that we continue to hear is that you cannot obtain large prints from digital photography.  This may have been the case five years ago with the first generation of low resolution digital cameras, however today we routinely shoot digital images and have enlargements up to 20x30" without any noticeable defects.  Don't believe us?  Then make an appointment with our office and we'll show you the results.  We promise you'll be blown away with the detail and quality of our images!

How are we different?
Distinct Digital Photography don't profess to be the "leaders" in professional digital photography in the Hunter Valley for no reason.  We believe that our services are totally unique to this area, and our customers have certainly proved the point by coming back time after time.

What sets us apart is our totally new approach to the capture, processing and handling of photography.  Our entire workflow is digital - meaning that we don't waste time waiting for film development, scanning or other costly and time-consuming processes.  We rely on our high-speed computer systems to manage all aspects of imaging including editing, processing and publishing.  Our modern and sleek web photo gallery offers online access to our images and even the opportunity to place orders for prints directly with us.  High-resolution images can optionally be supplied on CD-ROM for printing at a laboratory of your choice.

Unlike some other professional photographers, Distinct Digital Photography does not operate a printing laboratory in-house.  We believe that such a highly-specialised service should be left to the experts, and for this reason we have partnered with a professional laboratory, Nulab to manage the printing of all images.  We trust Nulab to supply consistent, professional quality images that are required for Distinct Digital Photography to maintain strict quality controls.  The end result is that you can feel confident that your images will last the distance - in fact, Kodak has recently guaranteed that prints on their professional Endura paper will last up to 200 years!

What else can we offer?
One of the most popular areas where digital imaging is taking off is in the area of wedding photography.  Many couples are choosing to have "magazine-style" albums produced.  These albums are essentially a composition of multiple images, text and vibrant backgrounds put together and printed as a single image.  We ensure that the magazine-style album is printed right to the very edge of the page and don't use cardboard mat surrounds.  All our albums are professionally hand-made from scratch and are designed to be the centre-piece of any coffee table.

We make it a point of capturing all our images in high resolution full colour.  From there, we can manipulate the image to give some striking new looks, including the traditional black & white, "old-style" sepia wash, the vibrant colour cross-processed look, or even "hand-colouring" parts of the image.  The best part is that it's all achievable with a few clicks of the mouse and you can see the results instantly.
